The title of this new series is Suikoden Tierkreis. I’ve gotten this news is from Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2008 in Konami Booth, it was scheduled to be released in 12/18/2008. Because I’m a Suikoden-mania so this news is really catching my attention. Here is the full news from the spot:

TOKYO–Though the locations and cast members have changed throughout its history, the Suikoden series has traditionally been known as a character-heavy role-playing adventure on a grand scale. In Suikoden Tierkreis, the series ventures to the DS for the first time, but seems to be preserving the pillars on which its success was built. There are 108 unique characters throughout the game that you can meet, recruit, and form relationships with, and you’ll do so during an adventure that starts small but soon blossoms into an epic endeavor. We visited Konami’s booth at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show and spent some time adventuring, battling, and fast-forwarding through a whole lot of Japanese dialogue.

The opening cinematic reaffirms Suikoden’s commitment to featuring a hefty number of characters, and we saw a wide variety of locations scroll by, each populated with a bunch of unique inhabitants. The level began with an isometric view of our party members (four total) following a dirt path through a light forest. Our compatriots bantered for a while, and we watched as anime drawings of each character popped up and spoke through a text bubble (in Japanese, of course). This happened often throughout our time with the game, occasionally with corresponding voice acting, and it quickly became clear how focused the game was on character interaction and development. Some conversations even prompted us with a choice of responses, though it was hard to tell what consequences those choices had, if any.

The protagonist of Suikoden Tierkreis is a young man who sets out from his village to rid the surrounding area of monsters, only to end up in a wide, forested valley. As we played, we reached a point where the ground began to rumble violently, trees began to fall, and rocks began to crumble. Out of the valley floor rose a vast stone statue of a human guardian holding a large staff. This statue turned out to be a large temple, and upon exploring the interior, we discovered a mysterious book lying in the middle of a circular chamber. In one of the frequent animated cutscenes, the protagonist was drawn inextricably toward the book and grabbed ahold of it, unleashing a flood of memories that seemed to echo the past destruction that left the temple in its currently ruined state. This book also seemed to endow our hero with some magical powers, which we tested out on a later level that allowed us to sink our teeth into the combat system.

Random monster encounters are the order of the day here, and they cast your party of four into turn-based battle. Your short, big-headed characters face off against a wide variety of baddies, and there are multiple levels of combat control. You can choose to have your squad all use their basic attacks on the enemy, or you can select the actions of each party member individually. You can choose a basic melee or ranged attack, a magic attack, or a high-powered team attack, depending on each character’s abilities. Magic attacks cost spell points, naturally, and seem to fill familiar niches like attack, healing, and defensive or offensive buff. Team attacks can only be performed by certain characters, and we imagine that this will be an important consideration when choosing your few party members. Most of our random encounter battles played out quickly as we chose the general attack command, but we did encounter some tougher foes that required more strategic micromanagement.

At the end of battle you’ll earn experience points, level up, and receive items from your vanquished foes. These can all be viewed and managed in the easily accessible inventory screen. You can choose to use the stylus or the D pad and face buttons to navigate the world and the menu screens. We found the stylus was generally easier to use, especially when moving around the area map.

In our relatively brief time with Suikoden Tierkreis we saw puma men, bipedal fish people, and a large room of glowing teleportation bays, all of which seemed to point to an impressive breadth of story and character types. This will likely please Suikoden fans, and should interest folks looking for a robust handheld role-playing game.

Well, because Fallout 3 now is a best game in many console like PS3 and XBox360, that’s why i tried to install it in my quad core PC. And here is my review after I’ve played it:

A lot of games make a big deal out of player choice, but few in recent memory offer so many intricate, meaningful ways of approaching any given situation. You fulfill or dash the spiritual hopes of an idyllic society, side with slavers or their slaves, and decide the fate of more than one city over the course of your postapocalyptic journey through the Washington, DC wasteland. Your actions have far-reaching consequences that affect not just the world around you but also the way you play, and it’s this freedom that makes Fallout 3 worth playing–and replaying. It’s deep and mesmerizing, and though not as staggeringly broad as the developer’s previous games, it’s more focused and vividly realized.

This focus is obvious from the first hour of the game, in which character creation and story exposition are beautifully woven together. It’s an introduction best experienced on your own rather than described in detail here, but it does set up Fallout 3’s framework: It’s the year 2277, and you and your father are residents of Vault 101, one of many such constructs that shelter the earth’s population from the dangers of postnuclear destruction. When dad escapes the vault without so much as a goodbye, you go off in search of him, only to find yourself snagged in a political and scientific tug of war that lets you change the course of the future. As you make your way through the decaying remnants of the District and its surrounding areas (you’ll visit Arlington, Chevy Chase, and other suburban locales), you encounter passive-aggressive ghouls, a bumbling scientist, and an old Fallout friend named Harold who has, well, a lot on his mind. Another highlight is a diminutive collective of Lord of the Flies-esque refugees who reluctantly welcome you into their society, assuming that you play your cards right.

The city is also one of Fallout 3’s stars. It’s a somber world out there, in which a crumbling Washington Monument stands watch over murky green puddles and lurching beasts called mirelurks. You’ll discover new quests and characters while exploring, of course, but traversing the city is rewarding on its own, whether you decide to explore the back rooms of a cola factory or approach the heavily guarded steps of the Capitol building. In fact, though occasional silly asides and amusing dialogue provide some humorous respite, it’s more serious than previous Fallout games. It even occasionally feels a bit stiff and sterile, thus diminishing the sense of emotional connection that would give some late-game decisions more poignancy. Additionally, the franchise’s black humor is present but not nearly as prevalent, though Fallout 3 is still keenly aware of its roots. The haughty pseudogovernment called the Enclave and the freedom fighters known as the Brotherhood of Steel are still powerful forces, and the main story centers around concepts and objectives that Fallout purists will be familiar with.

Although some of that trademark Bethesda brittleness hangs in the air, the mature dialogue (it’s a bit unnerving but wholly authentic the first time you hear 8-year-olds muttering expletives) and pockets of backstory make for a compelling trek. There are more tidbits than you could possibly discover on a single play-through. For example, a skill perk (more on these later) will enable you to extract information from a lady of the evening, information that in turn sheds new light on a few characters–and lets you complete a story quest in an unexpected way. A mission to find a self-realized android may initiate a fascinating look at a futuristic Underground Railroad, but a little side gossiping might let you lie your way to quest completion. There aren’t as many quests as you may expect, but their complexity can be astonishing. Just be sure to explore them fully before pushing the story forward: Once it ends, the game is over, which means that you’ll need to revert to an earlier saved game if you intend to explore once you finish the main quest.

Thus choices are ruled only by your own sense of propriety and the impending results. For every “bad” decision you make (break into someone’s room, sacrifice a soldier to save your own hide), your karma goes down; if you do something “good” (find a home for an orphan, give water to a beggar), your karma goes up. These situations trigger more consequences: Dialogue choices open up, others close off, and your reputation will delight some while antagonizing others. For example, a mutant with a heart of gold will join you as a party member, but only if your karma is high enough, whereas a brigand requires you to be on the heartless side. Even in the last moments of the game, you are making important choices that will be recounted to you during the ending scene, similar to the endings in the previous Fallout games. There are loads of different ending sequences depending on how you completed various quests, and the way they are patched together into a cohesive epilogue is pretty clever.

Fallout 3 remains true to the series’ character development system, using a similar system of attributes, skills, and perks, including the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system from previous games for your attributes, such as strength, perception, and endurance. From there, you can specialize in a number of skills, from heavy weapons and lock-picking to item repairing and terminal hacking. You will further invest in these skills each time you level, and you’ll also choose an additional perk. Perks offer a number of varied enhancements that can be both incredibly helpful and a bit creepy. You could go for the ladykiller perk, which opens up dialogue options with some women and makes others easier to slay. Or the cannibal perk, which lets you feed off of fallen enemies to regain health at the risk of grossing out anyone who glimpses this particularly nasty habit. Not all of them are so dramatic, but they’re important aspects of character development that can create fascinating new options.

Although you can play from an odd-looking third-person perspective (your avatar looks like he or she is skating over the terrain), Fallout 3 is best played from a first-person view. Where combat is concerned, you will play much of the game as if it is a first-person shooter, though awkwardly slow movement and camera speeds mean that you’ll never confuse it for a true FPS. Armed with any number of ranged and melee weapons, you can bash and shoot attacking dogs and random raiders in a traditional manner. Yet even with its slight clunkiness, combat is satisfying. Shotguns (including the awesome sawed-off variant) have a lot of oomph, plasma rifles leave behind a nice pile of goo, and hammering a mutant’s head with the giant and cumbersome supersledge feels momentously brutal. Just be prepared to maintain these implements of death: Weapons and armor will gradually lose effectiveness and need repairing. You can take them to a specialist for fixing, but you can also repair them yourself, as long as you have another of the same item. It’s heartbreaking to break a favored weapon while fending off supermutants, but it reinforces the notion that everything you do in Fallout 3, even shooting your laser pistol, has consequences.

These aspects keep Fallout 3 from being a run-and-gun affair, and you shouldn’t expect to play it as one. This is because the most satisfying and gory moments of battle are products of the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or VATS. This system is a throwback to the action-point system of previous Fallout games, in that it lets you pause the action, spend action points by targeting a specific limb on your enemy, and watch the bloody results unfold in slow motion. You aren’t guaranteed a hit, though you can see how likely you are to strike any given limb and how much damage your attack might do. But landing a hit in VATS is immensely gratifying: The camera swoops in for a dramatic view, your bullet will zoom toward its target, and your foe’s head might burst in a shocking explosion of blood and brains. Or perhaps you will blow his limb completely off, sending an arm flying into the distance–or launch his entire body into oblivion.

I’m not surprised when i read about this news, because it’s obviously wii will outsell PS3 and Xbox360. The price of PS3 and Xbox360 is too inhuman for me, and i think they aren’t consumable too for majority of the gamers in Indonesia. Anyway, here is the official news:

In its latest financial report, Nintendo reported it had sold just under 35 million Wiis since the console’s late 2006 launch. That figure was for combined international sales in all territories including North America, Europe, and Asia–through September 30, 2008. The milestone came several months after the Wii overtook the Xbox 360 in lifetime-to-date sales in the US, according to industry-research firm the NPD Group.

Now Nintendo’s plucky platform has hit a new sales milestone across the Pacific Ocean. Via its Famitsu magazine, Japanese industry-research firm Enterbrain is reporting that Wii sales have exceeded 7 million units in the island nation as of last week. The console’s sales were boosted past this latest barrier by the launch of Animal Crossing: City Folk, which sold over 303,000 units during the week of November 17-23, according to Enterbrain’s estimates.

The Wii’s 7 million sales put it far ahead of its foes in the ongoing console conflict in Japan. According to Enterbrain figures quoted by GameDaily, Japanese sales of the PlayStation 3 numbered just 2.37 million units as of September 30, when the Wii had sold around 6.83 million units in the territory. Sony estimates the PS3 sold nearly 17 million units worldwide by the same date.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, the Xbox 360 continues to struggle in Japan despite massive marketing efforts. Enterbrain’s estimate had less than 750,000 units of the console being sold in territory since its 2005 launch. Worldwide to date, the console has sold over 25 million units, more than the original Xbox.

Well, since this is a big news for all NDS user so i will review about the new Nintendo DSi which is more advanced in hardware and software, and also thinner than Nintendo DS Lite. Here is the review anyway, enjoy.

The DSi is an updated DS portable that plays the same DS games as the original DS and DS Lite. System manufacturers traditionally revise system hardware regularly after launch to add new features and streamline components to reduce production costs. Sony has updated its portable system, the PSP, twice since the system’s release. Nintendo has also updated the DS twice since first releasing the system. The first DS revision, the DS Lite, arrived in 2006, and the latest revision, the DSi, started shipping in Japan on November 1, 2008.

The new feature additions and design changes in the DSi make it the most drastic system revision to date. While the DS Lite’s upgrades were primarily cosmetic improvements, the DSi includes new hardware functionality, new software, and an updated menu system, in addition to several physical design changes.

We’ll start with the DSi’s cosmetic changes because that is what everyone will see before cracking the clamshell open. One significant change that doesn’t pop out in photographs is the system’s new paint job. Our matte black DSi has a grainy textured surface far different from the slick plastic exterior on the DS Lite. The material feels similar to the inside surface surrounding each screen on the DS Lite, but it’s grittier.

The DSi is thinner than the DS Lite, but the new portable is also slightly longer and wider, so don’t expect it to slide into your front pocket any easier. The top edge of the system reveals redesigned shoulder buttons and a new AC power adapter port shape, which instantly makes all of your back-up power adapters obsolete. The DS Lite’s shoulder buttons sit flush with the top of the system, but the DSi’s buttons protrude out, making them easier to press.

You’ll find the new SD memory card slot on the right-hand side of the portable where the power slider used to be located. The SD card will be used to store pictures, AAC music files, and software downloaded from the online DSiShop–basically anything that can’t fit on the system’s 256MB internal memory. The power button is now located inside the DSi near the lower-left area of the touch screen. The button is fairly stiff, so there’s little risk of accidentally turning off the system midgame. Tapping the power button will take you back to the home menu and holding it down will shut down the unit.

save

Well, that’s the truth apparently. Here is the official news:

According to data from M-Create, the DS Lite has sold an average of 166,818 units a week from April 10 to June 11, while the PSP has been relegated to an average of 29,307 units in the same time period. Even more impressive is that fact that the the original (bulky, ugly) DS outsold the PSP at the same time that the DS Lite was on the market. Of course, hardware sales don’t mean much unless people are buying games, and the Japanese game charts also boast some impressive sales for Nintendo. Ten titles have reportedly sold more than a million copies.

As of September 26, 2007, the Nintendo DS has sold over 50 million units and is the fastest-selling handheld game console of all time. On October 30, 2007, Chart-Track reported DS sales of over 4 million in the United Kingdom. In November 2007, Media Create reported DS sales of 20 million in Japan.

During the week of November 18 to November 24, Nintendo of America set a new Nintendo sales record by selling over 653,000 DS units in one week, breaking the previous record held by the Game Boy Advance, which sold 600,000 units.

On November 27, 2007, Nintendo announced that the DS has set a new weekly hardware sales record in the UK, with over 191,000 units sold, according to Chart-Track; breaking the previous record held by the PSP, which sold 185,000 units in its first week of availability in the UK.

As of December 27, 2007, the DS has sold over 1 million units in South Korea, according to Nintendo of Korea.

In 2007, the DS was the best-selling game console in the US and Japan with 8.5 million and 7,143,702 units sold respectively, according to the NPD Group and Enterbrain. In Europe, the DS sold 6.4 million units in 2006 and 8.7 million in 2007, according to estimates by Electronic Arts.

As of June, 2008, The Nintendo DS has sold over 20 million units in the U.S.A, according to NPD Group.

well, it’s very clear for me that NDS is better than PSP.

Well, after a long hiatus because of exams and final trial for my graduation, at least i have some time to update my blog. And in this chance i want to review about wii game, the tales of symphonia. Here is the review anyway, enjoy.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is a lighthearted action role-playing game that reacquaints fans of the GameCube original with a wealth of familiar locations and faces. Although those who appreciated its predecessor’s lovable characters and fast-paced battle system will undoubtedly be thrilled with New World’s striking similarities, the game does little to progress beyond its forbearer aside from adding a superfluous monster-pact system. Additionally, those looking for a greater gameplay-to-cutscene ratio and a clearer, more interesting plot may be baffled by how drastically New World comes up short.

The game returns you to Tethe’alla and Sylvarant, two worlds finally reunited by the birth of a new World Tree. Unfortunately, world regeneration came with a price; the death of the old World Tree has unbalanced the world, causing climate change and crazed monsters to strike every town. Marta, a girl with a special gem, is seeking to restore the balance by awakening Ratatosk, lord of monsters, who should stop the monster attacks and fix the disastrous weather. A young orphan boy named Emil soon joins her in exchange for the power to avenge his parents’ death. The duo quickly meets numerous characters from the game’s progenitor, but you may be disappointed if you’re hoping to play with your favorites, given that you have zero control over who joins or leaves your party. Furthermore, though various plot points and background information are periodically explained, the storyline is an intimidating, convoluted mess.

The new pact system offers a refreshing twist to the battle system but quickly becomes irksome and meaningless. Each battlefield emphasizes an elemental grid consisting of one primary and five secondary elements; to form a pact with a monster to enlist its services, you must defeat it by matching the primary to four of the secondary elements via artes, which have elemental attributes. This can be a very frustrating process because your initial access to artes is limited; it’s also difficult to keep your allies from adjusting the grid without ordering them to stand down, but it gets easier as you acquire more artes. You may even find yourself accidentally befriending monsters, of which you can store more than 200. Unfortunately, forming pacts is largely unnecessary because you quickly gain more-powerful human allies and rarely travel without them, which makes monster hunting a moot point.

A few miscellaneous features provide a miniscule amount of depth, including side quests activated at the katz guild, though most of these are short, boring adventures that restrict you from saving the game until they’re finished. There is an item-synthesis system for turning the most banal of objects into awe-inspiring gear, but money and items are so easy to come by that it should be of interest only to item enthusiasts. Cooking is paired with the pact system to enable you to feed your monsters, which improves their stats and may even evolve them into a tougher form, but on the whole you’re left with little other than trivial side quests and needless monster management to pass the time.

Well, i bought this game just because there’s no GTA (Grand Theft Auto) type game in wii. But this game quite fun too when you try it yourself. Well, here is the review.

Provided that you play on the Wii or escape the wrath of the Xbox 360 version’s bounteous bugs, you’ll find an insanely entertaining experience that overcomes its small gameplay frustrations with heavy doses of humor and attitude. As new-kid-on-the-block Jimmy, you find your sneering self dumped at Bullworth Academy, a private school populated by the usual cliques we all came to know and hate in our own adolescences. By fulfilling missions, you’ll progress from one chapter to the next, alternately gaining sway over one social circle while alienating another. One of Bully’s many brilliant aspects is the variety it throws into these tasks. At one point, you’ll man a potato-spewing turret to defend arm-flailing, bedwetting nerds from invading jocks; at another, a professor instructs you to infiltrate the preppies’ dorm and kill a prized Venus flytrap. In fact, some of the most amusing missions were created specifically for the Scholarship Edition and revolve around a Kriss Kringle gone bad.

The story at the heart of Bully is incredibly involving, and Jimmy is both charming and exasperatingly cocky. He’s also believable, and likely to remind you of at least one person you know or knew in your younger years. The enormous surrounding cast of goofball nerds and slick-haired greasers deserves equal praise, from the obese and enuretic Algie to Mandy, the head cheerleader with a surprising streak of insecurity. The success here is twofold. Firstly, you have an incredible script bursting with both cringe-inducing realism and snort-out-loud one-liners. A romantic interest says “I’m such a player” after flowers and a kiss; cafeteria cook Edna tells you that hawking a loogie into the mystery stew gives it flavor. At first glance, these moments seem to play to stereotype, but each character transcends labels and comes across as remarkably individual. Secondly, the voice acting is utterly spectacular, from the main cast to the hysterical quips from minor characters you overhear in your travels.

You’re hardly stuck moving in a straight march from one mission to the next. As you play, more and more of the academy and its surrounding community open up, giving you plenty of leeway to explore Bully’s many unique nooks and crannies. If you choose to stay on campus, you can attend class in the morning or afternoon. Standbys such as gym (dodgeball time!) and chemistry are still here, but four new classes have been added, and they are arguably more entertaining than the holdovers. In biology class, you must carve open a specimen and remove its vital organs in an allotted amount of time–and it’s much tougher than it sounds. In geography, you must place the appropriate flag on its corresponding country. Math takes a Brain Age approach by asking you to quickly solve simple math problems, whereas music class involves a rhythm-based minigame. Passing your lesson means gaining a new reward, whether it be new clothing, new melee combos, or better aim with your slingshot.

Of course, you can skip class entirely (and risk being seen by the keen eyes of prefects and police officers) and tool around on your own. Here, you can bully other kids to your heart’s content, or save the meeker students from their own bullies by beating up the aggressors. Close combat is on the simple side, especially after you unlock various combinations. However, there are times when you’ll need to handle multiple enemies at once, which makes for a greater challenge. If you choose to explore your inner intimidator, there are plenty of ways to do it outside of fisticuffs, though. You can shoot bottle rockets at fellow students, give wedgies, stuff them into lockers or garbage cans, or taunt them once you’ve sufficiently whittled down their health bars. If you’d rather follow the straight (mostly) and narrow, you can romance the ladies (and a few gents) by giving them flowers–or chocolates, in the case of the big-boned gals–which usually merits a sloppy-sounding kiss. Alternately, you can run quick errands for townspeople, mow lawns for extra cash, participate in bike races, drop some quarters into arcade machines and gun for a high score, egg cars, take yearbook photos, or head to the local carnival and lounge with the little people. You could probably sprint through the main quest in 10 hours or so, but could easily spend four times that number if you wanted to see everything Bully has to offer.

If you want to extend the value even further, you can try out the local two-player minigames that are exclusive to this edition of Bully. These games take classes and arcade games from the single-player experience and transform them into competitive minitournaments. There are 10 of these events in total, ranging from photography and geography to English and Consumo. These minigames are good for some quick entertainment, though they don’t add a lot to the overall package. But given that they tie in nicely with the game proper and use all four of the new classes, they serve as more than just contrived add-ons.

Whew, i actually kinda surprised when i read this.

Over 18 million Xbox 360s have sold through since the console’s launch in November 2005, but just how many of those are still working? Squaretrade, a company that specializes in providing warranty support to purchasers of electronic goods from various manufacturers, claims 16% of Xbox 360s experience a hardware failure within six to ten months after a warranty purchase. Three out of every five failures were for the infamous “Red Ring of Death” general hardware failure error, a problem often linked to overheating.

The Xbox’s figures compare poorly to competing consoles, which have a failure rate of around 3% — and if anything, the Squaretrade figure underestimates the scale of the Xbox 360’s reliability issues. It’s a good bet that some buyers of Squaretrade warranties went straight to Microsoft after experiencing hardware issues and don’t factor into the 16% number. On its company blog, Squaretrade pointed out that failure rates are “certain to go up” as the machines in their study group grow older.

Microsoft is cagey about coughing up official failure rate figures, which has lead some commentators to speculate about the actual severity of the problem. Luke Plunkett, a blogger on respected games news site Kotaku, said in a recent post that if the real failure rate wasn’t in the 30-40% range, he’d “wolf down humble pie until his sides split.”

Plunkett’s sides are likely safe. Stories of 360 owners making their way through eight or nine consoles aren’t hard to find, but to its credit, Microsoft has been working with the affected individual in at least one of those cases to lessen the impact of the constant failures.

Even so, there’s a surprise lurking for consumers who return their 360s for repair. When you purchase content — arcade games, extra tracks, etc. — over Xbox Live, it’s playable by any user on the console you used to make the transaction. If you go to a different console and sign in with your gamertag, you can download the content and play it only for as long as you’re signed in. Once you move back to your main machine, it will no longer be playable. Sounds like a handy system to let you take the content you own from place to place, right?

But the trick with this system is that once a broken machine returns from its little vacation, it generally has sufficient internal changes to make it look, to Xbox Live, like a different console. So all your downloaded content — which, if you’re a heavy user, could amount to hundreds of dollars worth of purchases — are only accessible to one gamertag, and only when the console has a live internet connection.

Getting this situation resolved can be difficult. Affected users have reported having to make repeated calls to the Xbox support line, often to no avail. Some fortunate individuals were able to eventually convince the MS reps to refund all the points they’d spent so they could repurchase all the affected content, although they had to do it using a different gamertag.

This game get a score 9.5 from 10 in many websites, and i also think the same way. Because this game has many features that made this game different from other fighting games. Well, if you read this review and then play the game yourself, maybe you’ll understand the reason too. Enjoy the review then everyone :p

It’s been nine years since the original Super Smash Bros. brought some of the most iconic Nintendo characters together for frantic battles, and roughly seven years since its sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee was released. Perhaps even harder still to believe–and a testament to the series’ popularity and longevity–is that these games are still being played religiously to this day. But no matter whether you’re a diehard Smash Bros. fanatic or a neophyte brawler, you’ll be pleased to know that Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes a plethora of impressive characters, features, and game modes, and is more accessible and fun than ever before.

For the uninitiated, Smash Bros. is a multiplayer-centric series of fast-paced 2D fighting games that features a cast of characters from all over the Nintendo universe. If you’ve ever found yourself arguing with a friend about whether or not Mario could beat Link in a one-on-one match, Brawl is the game that will let you settle the issue once and for all (the answer of course is that Kirby would eat them both). Characters such as Ike from Fire Emblem, Meta Knight from Kirby, Fox McCloud from Star Fox, Lucas from the unreleased-in-the-US Mother 3 (Earthbound 2), Pikachu from Pokémon, and many more are all on the roster in Brawl, boosting its size up to an impressive 35 total characters–14 of which are hidden and must be unlocked. For the first time, the list of guests includes third-party, non-Nintendo characters such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog, and all of them bring their own signature fighting styles and moves to the game.

All of the characters have their own strengths and weaknesses, and learning how to protect yourself while taking advantage of your opponents’ flaws goes a long way toward securing a victory. There can be a surprising amount of strategy involved, from knowing when and how to attack to ensuring that the terrain of the sometimes over-the-top levels works for you rather than against you. But all that said, Brawl is an incredibly well-balanced game in which even a brand-new player can come away the victor against a hardened veteran.

Throughout combat, various types of items will spawn on the battlefield for use by the first player to reach them. Some, such as the beam sword, are offensive in nature and augment your attack capabilities, whereas others are restorative and will lower your damage meter. Many of these items are from the various games the characters originate from, such as the fire flower and the super mushroom from Super Mario Bros. Although a lot of them have been featured in the previous Smash Bros. games, many new ones appear in Brawl, including the superspicy curry, which makes your character breathe fire for a time. Also worthy of a mention are the various assist trophies, which summon non-playable characters such as Tingle from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or the 8-bit racers from Excitebike to help or hinder you. Some things–especially the hammer, bob-omb, and warp star–could be considered game-breaking due to their abilities to inflict fatal wounds nearly all of the time, but these items and any others can be toggled off in the options menu before a match begins.
